The
new record deals with multiple themes: Coming of Age, political criticism,
anxiety, and melancholic love. If you are into acoustic songs, then this be
exactly your thing. It’s back to basics again with this one with me sitting in
my bedroom recording with my cheap guitars and one microphone making it a very
intimate and close affair.
Please
Themes
Please is a breakup ballad about a hateful split up or Divorce. The narrative shows that she is scared of the future, while the Lyrical I reflects that their “mission is love”. The Lyrical I shows anxieties about letting down their family. The message of the song is that giving oneself the blame for a failed marriage or relationship is not the way to get over the breakup. The narrative is underlined by the dialogue which is noticeable when listening closely and reading the lyrics at the same time. She is begging for the Lyrical I to reconsider their choices. Their fear is shown when they do not understand why their knees are shaking. The Lyrical I saw love as a mission rather which he failed. This militarises and dehumanizes the concept of love. The reasons for the breakup are twofold. They are shown in the chorus as the Lyrical I feels stuck in the relationship and at the same time they realise that they also feel “stuff”. “Stuff” can mean hateful feelings but imply much more importantly that the Lyrical I felt love for the woman she which has made the Lyrical I anxious.
She is shown to be complicated: In one line She yells “I fucking hate you” at the Lyrical I while one line later She begs the Lyrical I to reconsider. It is also implied that She is struggling and in pain and that she herself has thought about breaking up herself. The outro is a direct dialogue between Lyrical I and She as the latter begs the Lyrical I to not throw her out while the Lyrical I replies by wishing death upon her shown using the Word “bleed” and at the same time asking her to “leave, please” which shows that the Lyrical I is not sure what will happen if she does not give in.
Lyrics
Please,
please explain to me why my knees are shaking
“Please…
Please!” she said to me. “Don’t leave me.”
My
mission is love and I am giving up
We
are breaking up cos I feel stuck
My
mission is love I am giving up
We
are breaking up cos I feel stuff
“Please
… Please! Don’t do this to me
I
fucking hate you!” She yelled
“Please
… Please don’t throw this away!
You
couldn’t have foreseen this
This
was my pain”
My
mission is love and I am giving up
We
are breaking up cos I feel stuck
My
mission is love I am giving up
We
are breaking up cos I feel stuff
“Please”
… Bleed
“Please” … Leave, please
Smoking and having a cup of Coffee (with Whiskey?) |
Whiskey
Themes
The chorus implies that “you and me” is whiskey and the Lyrical I. The song starts of with the chorus to show straight away the consequences of drug abuse and to make the listener understand the situation from the start. The first vers shows that the Lyrical I chooses to make these choices. The Lyrical I would rather look down an empty glass – “depth” - rather than face their fears and distance themselves from consumption. It also shows that the Lyrical I feels strengthened by alcohol consumption and that it eases bad thoughts in the mind. The repetition of “my mind” implies that the Lyrical I is struggling mentally due to alcohol consumption. It lies by stating that it feels “fine”.
The second vers shows a change in the perception of alcohol for the Lyrical I. They have by now realised its effects and choose to abandon alcohol consumption. “Hell” is the life of normalcy which the Lyrical I chooses rather than fulfilling their needs and consuming alcohol and cigarettes. The vers also shows the struggle of overcoming that addiction.
The final chorus reflects this development in the narrative by using the past tense. By now fictional time has passed and the Lyrical I reflects on how they used to consume drugs. The outro shows that the Lyrical I in the end has a set back and starts to drink again.
Lyrics
Smoking cigarettes for breakfast
Smoking cigarettes for tea
I’ll smoke some cigarettes in the evening
If it’s just you and me
I drink wine sometimes with tequila and with lime
I see beer in my dreams
Sober up! Whiskey
Sober up! Whiskey
I’ll choose depth over distance anytime
I’ll choose strength you ease my mind … my mind … my mind
I feel fine
I’m smoking cigarettes for breakfast
Smoking cigarettes for tea
I’ll smoke some cigarettes in the evening
If it’s just you and me
I drink wine sometimes with tequila and with lime
I see beer in my dreams
Sober up! Whiskey
Whiskey
I’ll choose hell over my needs
“Please … you stay!” I plead
What the hell am I gonna do?
I’ll stop to swallow you, Whiskey
I’ve smoked cigarettes for breakfast
Smoked cigarettes for tea
I’ve smoked cigarettes in the evening
When it was just you and me
I drank wine sometimes with tequila and with lime
I saw beer in my dreams
Sobered up with whiskey
Sobered up with whiskey
Sobered up with whiskey
I’m done now
Sobered up with whiskey
I'm done now
Autumn Leaves
Themes
In Autumn leaves the use of seasons shows the narrative development and a change throughout time. The meaning of the title is twofold. On the one hand it means that autumn goes away or passes by. On the other hand, it calls out to the leaves of autumn which fall to the ground.
The song is about falling down and picking oneself up again. It’s a coming-of-age song where the Lyrical I feels lost and does not know how to go on nor what to do next. They fear the future and feel lost in the present. This is underlined when the Lyrical I calls out for their mother asking for help.
The meaning mother is twofold again. On the one hand it represents the actual birthmother and on the other hand it represents nature. Thus the Lyrical I is also calling out to nature to show them the way.
In the end of the second vers the Lyrical I admits that they feel lost but they can see and reflect on the fact that they are missing something which in itself is a good thing. The Lyrical I realises that the only way to push on is letting go of the past.
Lyrics
Autumn
leaves don’t fall down
Winter
please, stay far in the background
Autumn
leaves don’t fall to the ground
I
know that I won’t sleep safe and sound
Summer
leaves, I’ve fallen to the ground
Once
again, my soul pierces sound
And
my soul is lost at sea
I
can’t swim through these summer leaves
Autumn
leaves please bless my soul
I’m
lost in the snow
Autumn
leaves please bless my soul
I’m
lost in the snow
Winter
last was white in snow
All
I know is you’ve lost what I have found
Mother
please, I’m lost at sea
I
can’t swim but I … I can see
Autumn
leaves please bless my soul
I’m
lost in the snow
Autumn
leaves please bless my soul
I’m
lost in the snow
I’m
lost in the snow
My
soul has lost the snow
I’ve
got to let go
I’ve got to let go
I'll See You Soon
Themes
Lyrics
Now
that you have to go I just wanna let you know
That
the best days were when it was just us two
I
know … I know you’re struggling too
I’ll
miss you as I’m looking to the moon
I’ll
see you soon
I
hope you don’t forget me but have a nice time
And
know I’ll think of you and you’ll be mine
But
most of all: the best days I’ve had they were with you
Now
I’m 500 miles away. Soon I’ll step on a train to visit you
I
think of you every day, every step of my way and I can’t wait
To
see you soon
Those
were the days between us two
I
know … I know you’re struggling … I know you’re struggling too
I’ll
miss you as I’m looking to the moon
I’ll
see you soon
Those
were the days between us two
Just
me and you
Just me and you
Julia
Themes
Julia shows war and suffering. The bombings happen after Julia had planned and started a revolt which ended in her dying. As a consequence the oppressor chooses to bomb the village to punish those who were close to her. Father Graham represents the grief of the town who all miss Julia and understand why she tried to fight.
The name Julia is the feminine version of Julius which derives from the God Jupiter. The God Jupiter stood for protection and laws. In the song this is Julia stands for the laws and protection broken by the attack.
Father Graham is conscientious and careful and reflects about life. Thomson implies confidence and optimism. This has been obliterated. The old church yard represents that those bombs have already fallen on graves. This shows a certain inevitability about the bombings. The marching band represents the close bond within the community.
The Officer and the bombs represent the oppressive regime which is objectified because the officer is not given a name.
Belfast is known for its tensions between protestants and Catholics in the last century. It shows that Misses Thomson and her son had previously fled the war, but it caught up with them.
Lyrics
Oh
when the bombs fell on the old church yard and father Graham died
I
knew him from my marching band
This
was the bombing that killed my neighbours
Misses
Thomson and her son. They were from Belfast … from Belfast
And
we don’t know where that came from
But
we all know who it was meant for
For
Julia, Oh Julia, Julia
Julie
had an awful fight with an officer in the night and in the night
Misses
Thomson died with her son by her side, he was frightened, he was terrified, he
was only five … only five
Father
Graham prayed for Julia a few hours before. He was a nice man decent and kind …
decent and kind
We
don’t know where that came from
But
we all know who it was meant for
For
Julia, Oh Julia, Julia
Julia,
Oh Julia, Julia
We
ran away from a loud blast
It
all happened so very fast
So
very fast
So
very fast
Oh
Julia, Oh Julia, Julia
Julia, Oh Julia, Julia
